Local Health Integration Network – LHIN
The Niagara Health System is one of approximately 250 health-care agencies in the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN. There are 14 Ontario LHINs, which came into being in 2006, the result of provincial legislation. LHINs are responsible for planning, integrating and funding health-care providers, including hospitals, community mental health and addictions agencies, community support services, community health centres, Community Care Access centres and long-term care homes. The geographic area covers 7,000 square kilometres, encompassing Brant, Burlington, Haldimand, Hamilton, Niagara and most of Norfolk.
With approximately 1.4 million people, it is the second-largest LHIN in Ontario in terms of population size. The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN is characterized by small rural communities and large urban centres, with a resident population that displays cultural and linguistic diversity. Hamilton and Niagara are designated communities for French language health services. Fort Erie is the largest port of entry into Canada for refugees.
