Investing in Our People
A supportive workplace environment creates a win-win situation for everyone – particularly our patients and staff. Evidence suggests that a good work environment for staff can improve patient outcomes.
The NHS is committed to a healthy workplace and has a Workplace Violence Prevention Program in place to protect employees, as per Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (Bill 168). The comprehensive program focuses on the following …Code of Conduct, Policies and Procedures, Incident Reporting System and Response to Incidents, Violence Environmental Risk Assessments, Security Program, Patient Care Practices, Staff training, Leader Support, Domestic / Family Violence.
The Workplace Relations and Behaviour Policy is an important component of the violence prevention program. It is our umbrella policy to address workplace violence and harassment. The policy outlines appropriate workplace behaviours and a complaint resolution process. It applies to all those in the NHS and identifies behaviours such as bullying, harassment, discrimination, abuse, assault or threats and acts of violence which are inappropriate and compromise our values of compassion, professionalism and respect. The policy outlines the responsibilities of employees and leaders of the NHS and the processes by which issues can be addressed, from self-directed resolution to formal investigation. It is important to note that inappropriate behaviours are not tolerated and consequences are clearly articulated. In addition to education around the policy, staff training to prevent violence is occurring.
