The Niagara Eating Disorder Outpatient Program provides outpatient services for clients with Eating Disorders. Referrals are accepted from all sources. We advise that clients see their family physician or a health care provider in order to ensure medical stability while waiting for assessment. Referrals should include demographic data, a brief history of symptoms, past and current height and weight, postural vitals signs, laboratory work and an ECG.
We try to see clients as quickly as possible. The current average length of time from receipt of referral to assessment is 6-8 weeks. We do a medical and psychosocial assessment. We administer a variety of inventories to help with diagnosis and evaluation of treatment. Our program dietician offers clients a nutritional assessment. A treatment or management plan is reviewed. We offer a variety of group programming and individual therapy, as well as outpatient management. We work in cooperation with the client’s other care providers. Our group programs are evidenced based (psycho-education, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy).
As we provide only outpatient services, clients requiring more intensive treatment are offered referrals to other program. For adults, these programs include the Homewood Health Centre, Toronto General Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital. For children and teenagers requiring intensive treatment, the appropriate referral sites are the Eating Disorder Programs at McMaster Children’s Hospital or the Hospital for Sick Children.
We strive to promote self-efficacy and empowerment of our clients. Our focus is on healthy life style and self-acceptance. We meet regularly with other providers in the Central-South Region and Provincially. We welcome your comments and questions regarding our services. We are a regional service and strive to meet the needs of our community.
