Richard Sit, a Charge Technologist for the NHS Kidney Care Program, plays an important role in achieving one of the program’s goals: Increasing the number of patients performing their dialysis at home independently.

Richard meets with patients and their families in their homes, assisting with important decisions that involve home renovations necessary to meet patients’ needs. Understanding that this can sometimes be unsettling for patients and their families, Richard makes himself available at any time to offer reassurance and technical support.

“Richard is intuitive to his patients’ concerns and seeks proactive solutions working within the Independent Dialysis team,” says NHS President Dr. Suzanne Johnston, who presented Richard with the honour Thursday evening at the 10th Annual NHS Awards of Excellence event. “Richard is well-deserving of the 2014 President’s Award of Excellence because he exemplifies all of the Niagara Health System’s values in his daily work. He is an intelligent, creative and forward-thinking individual who is driven to provide quality care and an exceptional patient experience.”

Richard also works with patients’ families, nurses, social workers and other technologists on a daily basis, and liaises with other hospital programs conducting research to ensure that the Kidney Care Program is using best practices. He has also written the Kidney Care Program technical policies and procedures.

Six additional awards were presented to members of the NHS team who were nominated by their peers for demonstrating exceptional behaviours related to the NHS’s Success Factors or Core Values.

Recipients are:

Our 2014 award winners and nominees are a wonderful representation of the outstanding people who work and volunteer at the NHS.”
