In Memory, In Honour and In Celebration

  • Remembering your Loved Ones
Families often choose, or a person may have left directions for Welland Hospital Foundation to be the charity to receive In Memory gifts. Donations may be made at any local funeral home or by calling the Foundation office.
  • Thanks for the Care
Many individuals or their families are so grateful for the care they receive at the Welland Hospital Site that they give an In Honour gift to the Foundation, often accompanied with a heartfelt note of thanks. Some people make a gift in honour of a physician, nurse or other caregiver. Notification of this gift is sent to the caregiver being honoured.
  • Celebrating Special Occasions
Some people choose to celebrate a milestone occasion such as an anniversary, birthday or retirement by asking guests to give an In Celebration donation on their behalf. Others give donations to Welland Hospital Foundation in celebration of someone else's special occasion such as the birth of a baby or a wedding shower. The celebrant receives a specially printed card advising of each donation that is received.

Legacy Gifts

Life Insurance Gifts
The desire to make a significant gift is often overshadowed by the overwhelming thought of the financial commitment required now. As well, the thought of using assets from the estate that would otherwise go to children or other beneficiaries may not be appealing.

Life insurance provides an alternative way of making a gift to the hospital through the Foundation and receiving recognition for the gift during the donor's lifetime.

A person may have an old, paid-up policy taken out to cover an early mortgage or to provide extra insurance when children were young. Donating the policy to the foundation costs nothing since the premiums have already been paid. In return, the donor may receive a tax receipt for the cash value of the donated policy.

Another option is to take out a new, irrevocable policy with the Foundation as the owner and beneficiary. A tax receipt may be provided to the donor in the amount of the annual premium.

The third option is an existing insurance policy on which premiums are still owed. The donor continues to pay the policy premiums, which may be tax deductible, either to the insurance company or the Foundation. The Foundation must be the owner and beneficiary.

Gifts Through Your Will (Bequests)
The Foundation has received many bequests from thoughtful donors who remembered the Foundation in their will.

A bequest is a gift stipulated in an individual's will, usually in the form of personal or real property. It is possible to plan a gift that will help ensure excellent health care while still making sure your family is well looked after.

Your estate will receive a tax receipt for the full value of the bequest - a significant tax benefit on a final tax return.

Types of Bequests:
Specific bequest indicates a specific amount of cash or a particular asset as a gift.

  • Residual bequest leaves a percentage of your estate as a gift.
  • Contingent bequest directs that Welland Hospital Foundation will receive all or a portion of your estate in the event of the prior death of other beneficiaries.
  • Residual bequest subject to life interest indicates the Foundation as the ultimate beneficiary of your estate, or a portion of it, after certain other beneficiaries have had the use of the income from the estate for their life times.

Stocks (Appreciated Securities)
Gifts of stock provide an alternative method for making a gift outside regular income sources. A gift of publicly traded securities, bonds or GICs can be donated to Welland Hospital Foundation.

Check with advisors
Welland Hospital Foundation recommends that you seek advice from your professional advisors: accountant, financial planner, insurance specialist or lawyer to choose the best gift planning options for your individual circumstances.

Gifting Securities

Changes to the 2006 federal budget allow individuals and corporations to donate securities such as stock or mutual funds and not have to include any portion of the resulting capital gain in their income. The donor wins and the charity wins.

If you wish to donate securities to Welland Hospital Foundation please download (Download Icon) our form and fill-in the required fields and then return it to the Welland Hospital Foundation offices at 65 Third St., Welland, ON L3B 4W6.

Investment Policy

Welland Hospital Foundation has received donations of securities from four donors since the elimination of the capital gains tax.

It is the foundation’s policy to immediately liquidate shares upon receiving them. The proceeds are either then invested in long or short investment products such as GIC’s or transferred to the Niagara Health System for equipment purchases as part of our annual commitment.

The Foundation is always seeking sponsorship partners to share costs for events to ensure as much money as possible is available to purchase urgently needed equipment and support hospital projects.

Sponsorship is a win-win opportunity to make a difference in your community and to receive public recognition for your company's philanthropic support.

For more information, call Heather J. Scott at 905-378-4647, ext. 32396 or email: heatherj.scott@niagarahealth.on.ca .

Welland Hospital Foundation runs a variety of ads in local newspapers including The Tribune, Voice of Pelham and Niagara This Week. These ads are to promote our annual events, recognize our $100+ donors, sell cash lottery tickets or communicate the current needs of the Niagara Health System - Welland Hospital Site.

Sponsorship by local businesses off-sets our advertising costs and allows the funds budgeted for this purpose to be transferred to the hospital for direct patient care related purchases.
