NHS - Welland Hospital Site Tuition Scholarship

($1,000 per year for up to four years for a student in a healthcare program at a college or university.)

This scholarship was established by Welland County General Hospital Board of Trustees in 1994 and continued under the Niagara Health System - Welland Hospital Site. The Welland Hospital Foundation co-ordinates the annual selection process.

The selection committee looks for a well-rounded student who is active as a community volunteer, as well as takes part in extra-curricular activities.

Alicia Iwanczuk, winner of the Niagara Health System Tuition Scholarship, has been accepted into the Medical Radiation Technologist program at McMaster University.  Alicia knew at a very early age medicine was for her. “It has been a dream of mine to work in a hospital,” she wrote in her application essay. “I was introduced to the healthcare system as a young girl attending the Teddy Bear clinic at an Open House … experiencing my beloved bear go through the experiences a normal patient would in a hospital … I never realized that this experience would mark the beginning of the rest of my life.”

Alicia has since been involved in many ways at the Welland Hospital including the Take Your Kids to Work Day, participated in the Take Care of Your Future March Break camp, volunteered at the same camp and volunteered on many occasions.

Dr. Ken Hope Memorial Book Award
($500 for first-year books and resources)

This award came about as a result of donations made to the Welland Hospital Foundation in memory of Dr. Ken Hope, a local physician for many years who passed away in November 2000.

"I know my husband would be very happy to know that we are giving a helping hand to our young people," said Dr. Joanna Hope, a family physician in Fenwick. "Ken was very involved with the youth in our area and my children and I are pleased to have had the opportunity to start a scholarship in his name."

Shalimar Stechyshyn, winner of the Dr. Ken Hope Book Award, will be attending Western University in the Bachelor of Science Program with aspirations of becoming a cardiologist due to personal experiences in her family.  “I have witnessed the debilitation a heart condition can cause, and have experienced the problems it can create within a family.” she wrote in her application.  “I realize that a career in Cardiology is quite demanding – I look forward to that challenge.”  Shalimar is an active young lady in sports, volunteering and working and still finding time to maintain a 93% average.

Lifetime Member Scholarship

The Lifetime Member Scholarship will award $500 for a first-year college or university student entering a medically related field. This scholarship will be offered only in any year that one of the foundation’s Lifetime Board Members passes away.

The newest scholarship, the Lifetime Member Scholarship, was presented to Mallory Tyler who will be attending McMaster University for Nursing.  On her application essay Mallory wrote, “It would truly be most rewarding to realize that my studies in the field of nursing will someday impact and benefit the lives of others through helping people maintain their precious health.”  Maintaining employment, extra-curricular and volunteering along with a high average keeps her a well-rounded student and young lady.
