Mentorship Program

A wide range of nursing and allied health-care professionals work together to deliver care to our inpatients and outpatients each day. This inter-professional teamwork and communication is a vital and ongoing process needing constant attention to ensure the best care for our patients.

The concept of a collaborative, team-based approach to care has been endorsed by governments throughout Canada and around the world. Inter-professional mentorship education is a necessary part of the process to help implement inter-professional care in our hospitals.

Mentoring Works!

The NHS, Brock University and Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre partnered through funding from HealthForceOntario to embrace the practice of inter-professional care and expanded the NHS Nursing Mentorship Program to provide an Inter-professional Mentorship Educational Program to allied health and nursing professionals alike.

Researchers from Brock University Nursing Department evaluated the outcomes of this exciting project – so far the results are very positive! More good news is that we have received more funding to further progress inter-professional education and care.

Since spring 2007, 196 mentors have been trained including:

  • Audiologists
  • Biomedical Engineering Technicians
  • Case Managers
  • Clinical Educator
  • Diagnostic Imaging Technicians/Technologists
  • Dialysis Technicians/Technologists
  • Dietitians

The mentorship program is helping to improve recruitment, retention and career satisfaction for new and experienced health professionals. In nursing all areas – Complex Continuing Care, Emergency, ICU, Medical, Surgical, Mental Health, Maternal/ Child - have mentors. It was wonderful to have nursing well represented since this professional group is in critical need of recruitment and retention strategies. The 40 new graduate nurses hired by the NHS in the last year have each benefited from mentorship.

We are hoping more professionals embrace this exciting change and become a mentor and leader for inter-professional care.
