Stroke Centre

The District Stroke Centre and Stroke Prevention Clinic at Greater Niagara General Site provides a co-ordinated approach to stroke care that emphasizes evidence-based practice across the care continuum, for the Niagara Region. The District Stroke program works collaboratively with its community partners to ensure clients have access to appropriate services in both the hospital and the community. The Centre recently began administering the clot-dissolving drug tPA, which is given at the onset of a stroke. The tPA program provides 24/7 assessment by emergency health care professionals.

The Stroke Prevention Clinic provides fast track, co-ordinated prevention services for clients presenting to medical offices and emergency rooms with symptoms of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or minor stroke. Clients require a referral from their family doctor or the emergency department physician if diagnosed with a TIA. Once in the Stroke Prevention Program, clients have access to the neurologist, nurse practitioner, dietitian, and social worker to address cerebrovascular risk factors and help prevent another stroke.
