Niagara Health scores for United Way

Niagara Health physicians, staff and volunteers have come together from across all of our sites to form the first-ever Niagara Health Extraordinaires hockey team, taking on the 97.7-HTZ FM Biggs and Barr Barians to raise awareness and funds in partnership for United Way.

The Biggs and Barr Barians may have had home-ice advantage in Saturday night’s matchup but the Extraordinaires showed extraordinary teamwork in their debut game by keeping the Biggs and Barr Barians on the tips of their skates.

Off the ice, Extraordinaires’ fans, family, friends and coworkers came together to cheer on their team with pompoms, clappers and a couple rounds of the wave.

The final score may have been 10-7 in favour of the Barr Barians, but the real stars of the game were everyone who supported the event to help us raise nearly $2700 for United Way.

“Thank you to our Niagara Health Extraordinaires and the Biggs and Barr Barians for your time, effort and extraordinary talent on the ice,” says Niagara Health President Dr. Suzanne Johnston. “Thank you as well to our stellar Niagara Health United Way committee for all your hard work preparing for the game and to our incredible volunteers who helped to make the night a success. We are so thrilled by your response in coming together to have fun while raising funds for an important cause. The sense of community is strong in Niagara and our team at Niagara Health is proud to contribute to building a healthier Niagara.”

We’d also like to extend our appreciation to everyone who came out to cheer on our team and to those who couldn’t be there in person but made an important assist by purchasing tickets.

The charity matchup was part of the ongoing Niagara Health United Way 2016 workplace campaign. Last year’s campaign raised $69,774 for United Way and we’re hoping to increase that amount by 10 per cent this year.
