Niagara Health honours physicians on Doctors' Day

Posted Apr 25th, 2024

As Doctors' Day approaches on Wednesday, May 1, Niagara Health is taking the opportunity to celebrate and honour the dedicated physicians who serve Niagara communities with unwavering commitment and excellence.

“Doctors’ Day provides us with a special opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to our dedicated physicians for their tireless efforts to ensure the highest standards of Safe and Quality Care,” says Lynn Guerriero, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Through their expertise, compassion and collaborative spirit, they continue to make a profound impact on the lives of those we serve.”

Niagara Health's more than 600 physicians represent a diverse array of specialties and play an integral role in the organization's multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

“In light of the challenges posed by an evolving healthcare landscape, it is essential to acknowledge the sacrifices and dedication demonstrated by physicians over the past few years,” says Dr. Satish Chawla, Interim Chief of Staff and Executive Vice-President, Medical Affairs. “In the face of these challenges, our physicians have remained steadfast in their commitment to delivering exceptional care.”

Despite physician recruitment challenges felt across many healthcare organizations, Niagara Health has been successful in retaining and recruiting the best and brightest to work across the hospital system. Attracting specialists from across Canada and internationally, Niagara Health has welcomed 52 physicians in key areas, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine and general internal medicine, since May 2023.

About Doctors’ Day
Doctors’ Day is celebrated across Ontario, annually on May 1, to recognize the province’s doctors and their commitment to improving the health of all patients. May 1 was chosen to mark the birthday of Dr. Emily Stowe, the first woman to practice medicine in Canada and a founder of Canada’s women's movement.
