All ophthalmologists at Niagara Health work together at the Welland Site to perform cataract surgery, as well as other general ophthalmologic procedures in the operating room suites, minor procedure area and clinic settings.
The ophthalmologists perform about 5,300 cataract procedures per year and have a dedicated day surgery area along with a teaching classroom which provides education for patients undergoing this type of surgery.
Niagara Health, in partnership with our Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) providers, meet regularly to review ophthalmology processes and standards in order to optimize patient care and identify opportunities for improvement within the program.
The consolidation of Ophthalmology to one site provides the program with the opportunity to reduce duplication of capital equipment and supports the provision of high-quality care through dedicated, trained staff members working within the service.
