The new hospital we are planning to build at Lyons Creek and Montrose roads in Niagara Falls will provide residents across the region with access to a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services.
Based on research of patients’ needs in Niagara, we will create Centres of Excellence that specialize in stroke, complex care, eye care, seniors’ wellness and academic education. A patient-centred and senior-friendly focus will be embedded in all aspects of the patient experience.
Residents will also have full access at the new hospital to emergency and urgent care, medical and surgical services, intensive care, dialysis, diagnostic imaging, among many other core and specialty services.
The model we are planning anticipates the need for growth in inpatient beds, projecting 100 new beds in 2023 (located in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines) and an additional 140 new inpatient beds in 2033 (majority located in Niagara Falls).
As well, more than 80 percent of the rooms at the Niagara Falls South Site will be single rooms for enhanced infection prevention and control.
In 2012, unanimous agreement was reached among Mayors and the Regional Chair of the day for this hospital location in Niagara Falls. The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care subsequently approved the site location. It is on the basis of these approvals, as well as the Minister’s approval of the final report prepared by Dr. Kevin Smith, that we are moving forward with our planning.
