New food service model to be introduced in cafeterias

Posted Oct 28th, 2010

Niagara, Ontario: Niagara Health System will begin transitioning Nov. 1 to a new food service model in its cafeterias.

“This new model is consistent with the model used by other hospitals across the province,” says Chief Operating Officer Bala Kathiresan. “With this new model, the Niagara Health System will no longer have to subsidize the cafeteria operations. At the same time, customers will see an improvement in the food selection as new selections, including healthy menu choices, are added to the menus.”

Following a Request for Proposal process, ARAMARK Canada Ltd. was selected to run the five cafeterias at Douglas Memorial, Greater Niagara General, Port Colborne, St. Catharines General and Welland sites. The transition will take place between Nov. 1 and 22.

“We continue to work with the Service Employees International Union to minimize impact to staff and honour the collective bargaining language,” says Bala. “Labour Relations continues to develop and implement appropriate labour transition strategies for affected staff.”
