New health complex achieving international profile

Posted May 24th, 2012

With 186 days left in the construction schedule, the building is looking more like a hospital with each day that passes. On budget, on schedule and over 90% complete, the design of this world-class facility took the strengths of local knowledge from our clinicians and global expertise of our architects to create a building that is focused on the patient experience and outcome.

185 days until construction is complete!

Because the project is still a very active construction site with limited access, we have been looking at providing innovative ways to showcase spaces that are nearing completion in this period of ongoing construction.

Our local media has been instrumental in assisting us to illustrate to the greater Niagara community how our new hospital will enable us to provide care in new ways.

A special thanks goes to TV Cogeco Niagara for providing in depth video coverage of our new hospital events and tours, most recently including videos featuring the new Critical Care Unit with Dr. Mark Jany, the Operating Suites with Dr. Anna Kobylecky and the Walker Family Cancer Centre with Dr. Janice Giesbrecht.

Look forward to features of more departments as we continue entering the home stretch!

Accessing emergency and urgent care services at our
new hospital

The next installment in our media series will feature our future Emergency Department that will serve residents of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding area when our new health complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre opens to provide patient care in the Spring of 2013.

The media is being invited to learn how patients will receive emergency and urgent care treatment at our new hospital; whether they arrive by ambulance or by presenting at the Emergency Department.

Once emergency services move to the new health complex in 2013, acute and urgent care services with one central triage will be provided under one roof.

There will be two distinct areas in Emergency Services: Acute and Urgent Care. Acute Care will primarily serve patients at the more acute levels (triage levels one, two and three) while Urgent Care will serve less urgent patients (triage levels four and five). The goal of the area will be to reduce patient time in Emergency by having patients move quickly from triage and waiting directly into a treatment area for bedside registration and treatment if required.

Look forward to the upcoming coverage of this installment in the series profiling our new hospital!

Please join us in achieving the goal of providing one million square feet of care
