Artwork conveys culture of caring in NHS Holiday Card Contest

Posted Dec 23rd, 2015

The culture of caring for others in the spirit of the holiday season is reflected in this year’s winner of the Niagara Health System Ninth Annual Holiday Card Contest.

Children and grandchildren aged 12 or under of NHS staff, physicians and volunteers were invited to participate in an artwork contest this month, giving them the chance to be selected as the acclaimed artist of the NHS holiday card that is distributed to community members and partners across the region and province. This year we received 58 creative entries.

Sofia Vescio, age 12, daughter of Lina Vescio, a Clinical Dietitian at the Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, was the talented artist and grand prize winner. The attention to detail in Sofia’s drawing made it a perfect fit for the NHS holiday card.

“Sofia has been entering the contest since she was seven years old and spent so much time working on the drawing and purchasing just the right art tools from the craft store,” said her mother, Lina. “Sofia wanted the drawing to show the teamwork that she sees when visiting the hospital and how staff work together to care for patients and families.”

“It was wonderful to see so many inspirational entries that illustrate the caring culture here at Niagara Health. It is never an easy task to select the winners,” says NHS President Suzanne Johnston.

Sofia is joined by four other artists, who are winners in the following categories:
Your Favourite: Izabela Pierog, age 11, St. Catharines (as voted by staff, physicians and volunteers)
Ages 3-5: Alyssa Bodner, age 5, Welland, daughter of Casey Bodner
Ages 6-8: Leah St. Onge, age 8, Niagara Falls
Ages 9-12: Ben Buttner, age 10, Fonthill
