Niagara Health celebrates excellence in nursing

Nursing Week begins today at Niagara Health, and we’re celebrating excellence in nursing and recognizing our nurses for all they do to provide an extraordinary patient experience.

At 2,200 strong, our Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses make up almost half of the Niagara Health staff population, caring for an estimated 500,000 patients each year. The impact of our nurses’ contributions is felt in every aspect of care.

Throughout the week, we look forward to several activities and celebrations taking place at Niagara Health to acknowledge the inspiring leadership and excellence in our nursing professionals.

Nursing Week Awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m at John Michael’s Banquet & Conference Centre in Thorold at the Nursing Awards and Celebration Gala. The awards will be presented to 12 extraordinary individuals and one team who have been nominated by their peers from across our sites.

The celebration will also include highlights of the scholarly achievements of our nursing professionals over the past year. These achievements include presentations to hospital leaders at provincial and national conferences, research articles in nursing journals, research scholarship awards and national certifications in specialty areas of care.  We are recognizing the following nurses for their educational achievements:

  • Nancy Aedy
  • Teresa Calisina
  • Cathy Case
  • Carmen Cernusca
  • Maria Condeno

Nursing Week is being celebrated across Canada. This year’s theme, Nurses: With you every step of the way, emphasizes how important nurses are in our lives – at every age, in all health situations, for all Canadians.

“Nurses are by our side throughout our care journeys and make an extraordinary impact on the lives of those we serve,” says Niagara Health Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive Derek McNally.  “We would like to recognize our compassionate nurses for their dedication and commitment to providing a safe and positive experience for our patients. Join us as we recognize nurses for their ongoing commitment to providing safe, high-quality patient care.”
