Innovative tool improves patient experience at Niagara Health, Hotel Dieu Shaver Health

Posted Sep 13th, 2016

Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre and Niagara Health have invested in an innovative new tool that improves the flow of patients by helping them to more quickly access the proper level of care they need.

With this new tool, patients at Niagara Health needing rehabilitation or complex care will be identified sooner, allowing for a more seamless transition to the next level of care and resulting in reduced wait times. This is another example of Niagara Health and Hotel Dieu Shaver working together to identify opportunities to improve the patient experience within their own organizations and the larger healthcare system.

Oculys Performance is a patient flow dashboard accessible by both organizations that allows for tracking of patients throughout their journey. It tracks potential admissions and discharges, and enhances communication so patient care decisions can be made in real time. This is the first time the two hospital organizations are using the same tool to improve access and enhance the patient experience.

“We are very pleased to introduce this next phase of the Oculys Performance tool together with Hotel Dieu Shaver,” says Derek McNally, Executive Vice President Clinical Services & Chief Nursing Executive at Niagara Health. “We know access to care and wait times are a priority in our community, and we will continue our work with Hotel Dieu Shaver and other important healthcare partners to enhance our patients’ experience.”

“This new tool allows Hotel Dieu Shaver to partner with Niagara Health and identify and track potential admissions that are most appropriate for our beds,” says David Ceglie, Vice President of Clinical Operations at Hotel Dieu Shaver. “Through increased visibility, both Niagara Health and Hotel Dieu Shaver can ensure a patient’s transfer is as seamless and efficient as possible. This tool will be instrumental for both organizations ability to place the right patient, in the right bed, at the right time.”
