Niagara Health recognized for helping to improve organ donation

Posted Jan 25th, 2018

Niagara Health was recently recognized by the Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) for its dedication to helping improve organ and tissue donation in Ontario.

Niagara Health was recognized for its conversion rate, which calculates the number of potential organ donors who became actual organ donors. Between July and September 2017, Niagara Health was one of 19 hospitals in Ontario to meet or exceed the target of a 58 per cent conversion rate set by TGLN.

“Niagara Health is honoured to be partners with Trillium Gift of Life Network in this important effort,” says Heather Paterson, Niagara Health’s Director of Clinical Services.

Trillium Gift of Life Network, a not-for-profit agency of the Ontario Government, plans, promotes, coordinates and supports organ and tissue donation and transplantation across Ontario.

The commitment by TGLN's hospital partners has led to a marked increase in donation and transplant. However, despite the increase, the need for transplant continues to outweigh the number of organs available for transplant.

One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of up to 75 more through the gift of tissue.
