Niagara Health's South Niagara Project has reached another major milestone with the selection of Stantec Architecture Ltd. as the successful proponent to the Planning, Design and Conformance (PDC) Request for Proposals.
Led by Stantec Architecture Ltd., the PDC team will establish the guidelines and requirements that the successful building team must meet when preparing its designs. The PDC team will also monitor the construction progress and provide coordination and oversight during the commissioning and completion of the project. Kick-off meetings and early workshops are currently being organized, with the first major engagement of stakeholders to begin in September 2020. Kick-off virtual meetings and workshops are currently being organized, with the first major engagement of stakeholders to begin in the Fall 2020. Engagements are being planned to accommodate both virtual and in-person meetings to reflect physical distancing protocols at that point.
In early 2021, Niagara Health and Infrastructure Ontario expect to issue a request for qualifications for teams to design, build, finance and maintain the South Niagara hospital using the public-private partnership (P3) model. Under the P3 model, risks associated with the design, construction, financing and maintenance of complex hospital projects are transferred to the private sector. Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health are working with Niagara Health to procure and deliver the new hospital, which will be publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
The South Niagara Site will be larger than the St. Catharines Site, and will have a seniors’ focus embedded into all aspects of the patient care experience. The project involves the creation of Centres of Excellence in Regional Stroke, Complex Care, Geriatrics/Psychogeriatrics, and Wellness in Aging. The project will add additional medical/surgical, critical care and complex care beds for the Region.
