COVID-19 outbreak declared on inpatient unit at Greater Niagara General Site

Niagara Health today declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on the inpatient Trillium Unit at the Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls.

This outbreak was declared as a result of a healthcare-associated case involving a healthcare worker on the unit.

Contact tracing by our Infection Prevention and Control & Occupational Health and Safety teams has determined that this case is linked to a healthcare worker previously identified as a community-acquired COVID-19 case.

In addition to the two healthcare workers, our follow up investigation has determined that six patients on the unit are also positive for COVID-19.

A number of additional safety precautions are in place in response to this outbreak, and further testing of patients and staff is ongoing.

“This is a very unfortunate situation, and we have taken immediate action to protect the health and wellbeing of our patients, staff and physicians,” says Derek McNally, Executive Vice President Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive. “Additional support and education are underway to prevent further spread of this highly contagious virus, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment.”
