No evidence of COVID-19 transmission on Niagara Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Niagara Health is pleased to report that all infants on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) have tested negative for COVID-19.

The tests were precautionary and performed out of an abundance of caution following a potential exposure of the virus on the unit.

“I would like to thank all families on the NICU for their understanding while we took these additional steps to ensure the safety of our youngest patients,” said Dr. Johan Viljoen, Niagara Health Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs. “We are pleased that all tests were negative and that there is no evidence of transmission on the unit.”

“The St. Catharines Site remains safe for women to give birth and receive care,” added Dr. Viljoen.

Niagara Health continues to maintain thorough infection prevention and control procedures to protect patients, visitors, staff and physicians. These measures include screening everyone entering the hospital for COVID-19, mandatory masking for all patients and visitors entering the hospital, and requirements for physical distancing and regular hand cleaning.
