Update: Welland Hospital Operating Room repairs and surgical services
Niagara Health continues to respond to a water leak that caused significant damage to the Operating Rooms (OR) at Welland Hospital. Repairs are underway, and we are working hard to complete the full scope of reconstruction within two months. Our top priority is reopening the OR as soon and as safely as possible.
To date, 263 surgeries have been impacted by the closure:
- 215 ophthalmology cases
- 38 orthopedic cases
- 10 general surgery cases
We have successfully redirected general surgery cases to the Marotta Family Hospital and orthopedic surgeries to the Niagara Falls Hospital. The majority of affected cases are ophthalmology procedures, particularly cataract surgeries, which are the highest-volume procedures at Niagara Health.
To support patients and manage the backlog:
- Cataract surgeries are now being completed at Marotta Family Hospital
- We are offering evening and weekend surgical hours where possible to increase capacity
- We have engaged Ontario Health West and external partners to support cataract volumes
If your surgery has been rescheduled, your surgeon’s office will be in contact. For any questions about your procedure or expected wait time, please contact their office directly, as scheduling is managed through their clinic.

Update: Temporary Welland Hospital Service Disruptions
Following a recent pipe leak at Welland Hospital due to ageing infrastructure, our facility and clinical experts conducted a thorough assessment. As a result, we have made the decision to temporarily close the Operating Room (OR) to carry out necessary reconstruction, as the infrastructure in that area is no longer safe for continued use. We are currently finalizing the schedule and will share updates as soon as they are available.
To maintain continuity of care, surgical procedures, where possible, are being redirected to the Marotta Family and Niagara Falls Hospitals. If your surgery has been rescheduled, please note that it will no longer take place at Welland Hospital and may be moved to either the Niagara Falls or St. Catharines sites.

Niagara Health is managing water damage caused by a pipe leak in the building’s ageing infrastructure. Several areas have been affected, with the Operating Room (OR) and associated recovery rooms being the most impacted.
As a result, the OR is temporarily closed. Cleaning teams are on-site and working diligently to restore the affected areas and resume operations as soon as possible.
All patients impacted have been notified and/or rescheduled.
