South Niagara Hospital Project Celebrates Two Years of Construction

Posted Jul 30th, 2025

Construction of the South Niagara Hospital has reached the two-year mark, a major milestone in the development of a state-of-the-art facility that will bring world-class, patient-centred healthcare to Niagara residents.

“Reaching this point is really about the people behind it — the crews working on site every day, the generous donors and everyone helping to bring this hospital to life. We’re so grateful for the dedication and hard work that’s gone into building something that will serve our community for generations,” says Lynn Guerriero, President and CEO of Niagara Health. “The South Niagara Hospital will transform hospital care in the region by offering improved patient experiences, a better work environment for staff and a facility that will meet the evolving needs of our community.”

With a focus on accessibility, efficiency and innovation, the South Niagara Hospital will enhance healthcare delivery, ensuring residents receive high-quality treatment closer to home.

This new hospital will be more than bricks and mortar, it’s an investment in the health and well-being of every person in the region. Healthcare is a shared responsibility across all municipalities in Niagara, and this investment ensures better access to care, state-of-the-art facilities and the ability to meet the needs of Niagara’s growing and aging population for generations to come.

“This hospital stands as a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when a community unites behind a shared vision. After more than a decade of planning, we are now two years into construction and just three years away from opening the doors to a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that will meet the needs of our growing and changing community,” says fundraising co-chair and Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati.

In two short years, construction has progressed significantly, with crews now working on 10 floors of the 12-storey building. Concrete pouring continues on the upper levels, while crews on the lower levels are running mechanical and electrical services and putting up interior walls. Windows and exterior finish installations have commenced and roofing installations are ongoing on some of the lower levels. Major equipment such as electrical switchgears and transformers as well as the main air handling units are also being delivered. Outside the building, roads and parking lots are being paved on a majority of the 50-acre site. Currently more than 700 workers are on-site each day, a number that is soon expected to increase to over 1,000 people. They are advancing construction and keeping the project on-track for opening in 2028.

“In the two years since we broke ground at the South Niagara Hospital, our project team has made significant progress on a facility that will mean so much to the future of healthcare in the region,” says Andrew Anderson, Senior Vice President & Area Manager, Toronto, EllisDon. “Stemming from our collaborative relationship with Niagara Health and Infrastructure Ontario, the project has over 700 dedicated workers continuously adapting and overcoming challenges and seizing all opportunities to advance construction on-site each and every day. Our team, along with our partners and subtrades, will maintain this momentum over the coming years, ultimately delivering a state-of-the-art hospital that we all can be proud of.”

Niagara Health is also excited to share that when the building opens in 2028, it will be equipped with six additional patient rooms in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), increasing the total to 36 from 30.

On opening day, the South Niagara Hospital will have 475 single occupancy patient bedrooms, increasing our regional capacity by 162 beds. Having 100 per cent single-patient bedrooms is one of the exciting features of the hospital, helping to provide a better patient experience while also improving infection prevention and control. With eight operating suites, two MRI machines and an Emergency Department (ED) that is three times the size of the ED at the current Niagara Falls Hospital, the South Niagara Hospital will make significant advancements in increasing capacity, reducing wait times and improving patient care.
