Thousands of Canadians are living with hepatitis C without knowing it. Because the virus often shows no symptoms in its early stages, many people remain unaware they are infected until health complications arise.
This World Hepatitis Day, Niagara Health is bringing awareness, testing, education and support directly to the community with a free health event in St. Catharines.
“No one should face hepatitis C without knowing it,” says Karen Usick, Registered Nurse and Community Coordinator for the Hepatitis C Care Clinic. “With simple testing and highly effective treatment, this virus is both preventable and curable. Our mission is to reach every person at risk, break the silence around this disease and ensure everyone has the chance to live a healthier future.”
On Friday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., community members are invited to Montebello Park to access free hepatitis C screening, connect with health professionals and learn about available supports and services.
What to expect:
- Free, private hepatitis C testing
- Information about Niagara Health’s Hepatitis C Care Clinic
- Resources focused on liver health, addiction and mental health
- A community health and social services fair featuring local organizations
Hepatitis C is spread when blood carrying the virus enters the bloodstream of another person. While many people do not experience symptoms, testing can identify an infection early and connect people with treatment.
“Testing is key and treatments are highly effective,” says Usick.
Niagara Health’s Hepatitis C Care Clinic, part of the Addiction Services program since 2011, provides rapid testing, treatment and case management, counselling and emotional support, as well as education and community outreach.
The World Hepatitis Day event is designed to make information, screening and support more accessible while helping people connect with local health and social services in a welcoming community setting.
Whether you're seeking information for yourself, a family member or someone you support, community members are encouraged to stop by, ask questions and learn more about the resources available in Niagara.
