NIAGARA, ON – Niagara's newest member of the community is poised to keep the public involved in the construction progress of the new health-care complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre in St. Catharines. In collaboration with Niagara Health System (NHS), Plenary Health Niagara has launched a website dedicated to the design and construction of the new facility at http://nhs.plenaryprojects.com.

Set to replace the St. Catharines General and Ontario Street Sites in St. Catharines, the facility will also provide new regional services in cancer, mental health and cardiac treatment for all Niagara residents.

"We appreciate the importance of this project," says Plenary Health Chief Executive Officer Mike Marasco. "The community has devoted vast amounts of voluntary time and fundraising efforts to help bring modern health-care infrastructure to Niagara and we are very proud to be charged with responsibility for its delivery and ultimately contributing to the health-care opportunities for the people of Niagara now and well into the future."

Since the groundbreaking ceremony on April 28, PCL, the constructor for the project has been swift to designate the property at First Street and Fourth Avenue as official construction territory.

Crews have been busy clearing the site to prepare for excavation of the building's footprint in June and July, allowing the beginnings of the concrete structure to take shape in August 2009.

"We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support since the groundbreaking on April 28 where we first publicly introduced our new partner Plenary Health Niagara to the Niagara community," says NHS President and CEO Debbie Sevenpifer. "We are excited for new opportunities to brief the public on the facility's progress through open houses and other community activities in addition to the new website, as construction progresses over the next four years."

When the project is completed, Niagara will be home to one of the most up-to-date health-care facilities in the province, establishing infrastructure to care for and treat the health needs of the Niagara region.
