Dr. Lorraine Jensen named Chief of Medicine at Niagara Health

Niagara Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Lorraine Jensen has been named Chief of Medicine.

Dr. Jensen, the St. Catharines Site Lead of General Internal Medicine since 2017, will assume the position on Dec. 1. She will replace Dr. Terry Chan, who is wrapping up his second term in the role.

Dr. Jensen’s appointment follows a national search for the leadership position, which found the best candidate to be here at Niagara Health.

“As St. Catharines Site Lead of General Internal Medicine, Dr. Jensen has led innovative changes in care, such as developing a new palliative care service and redesigning the General Internal Medicine Rapid Assessment Clinic, and is committed to continuous quality improvement in the department,” says Dr. Johan Viljoen, Niagara Health Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President Medical. “Her appointment as Chief of Medicine reflects the accomplished, talented and dedicated team of physicians at Niagara Health.”

Dr. Jensen, who lives with her family in Niagara, is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. She has been the Clinical Teaching Unit Director, Internal Medicine, at the Niagara Regional Campus of the medical school since 2016.

As Chief of Medicine, she will help to oversee several departments, including Respirology, Critical Care, Nephrology, Cardiology, Geriatrics and others, working closely with the Heads of Service from each program.

We are grateful to Dr. Chan for his strong and effective leadership over the past 10 years and his dedication to providing high-quality care to the people we serve.

Dr. Chan has been instrumental in building our Medicine program across our sites, including helping to recruit the best and brightest to join the physician team at Niagara Health.
