Preferred Official Language Collection to Improve Communication and Patient Care

Posted Apr 15th, 2026

At Niagara Health, we are committed to providing safe, high‑quality and inclusive care for everyone we serve. Clear communication is an essential part of that care.

Starting April 15, 2026, we will ask patients about their preferred official language (English or French) at registration.

Why We Are Asking

Collecting this information helps us to:

  • Offer care and information in your preferred official language, where possible
  • Identify patients who may benefit from French Language Services
  • Arrange interpretation services when needed
  • Support clear understanding of care, treatment and instructions
  • Meet our obligations under the French Language Services Act

What Patients Should Know

  • Providing your preferred language is voluntary
  • Your care will not be affected by your choice
  • Your information is private and confidential

Where appropriate, Niagara Health has processes in place to assess and support language needs, including access to interpretation services.

A Broader Commitment to Equity

This is the first step in a phased approach to collecting standardized demographic information across Niagara Health. This work is supported by provincial direction and accreditation standards and is part of Niagara Health’s Health Equity Plan (2025–2028)

By better understanding our patients’ needs, we can continue to improve communication, access to care and patient experience across the communities we serve.
