The Orthopedic Radiation Oncology Clinic is an interdisciplinary assessment clinic for patients with Metastatic Bone Disease (MBD) to the appendicular skeleton.

The Orthopedic Radiation Oncology Clinic (OROC) is located at the Walker Family Cancer Centre in the Radiation Oncology Department. OROC is an interdisciplinary assessment clinic for patients with Metastatic Bone Disease (MBD) to the appendicular skeleton. It is facilitated by an Orthopedic Oncology Surgeon, a Radiation Oncologist and a Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist.

The goals of the OROC clinic are:

  • To identify patients at risk of pathologic fractures of weight bearing long bones
  • To provide education to patients and staff re: fracture risk and weight bearing restrictions
  • To provide rapid access to Radiation Therapy services at the WFCC for MBD
  • To provide timely access to surgical interventions which reduce pain, improve quality of life, preserve function and minimize fracture risk

The OROC clinic provides the following services:

  • Diagnostic Imaging Pre Assessment
  • Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Patient Assessment
  • Orthopedic Stabilization Opinion
  • Radiation Therapy Recommendations
  • Weight Bearing Restrictions and Recommendations
  • Multidisciplinary referrals as required: Urgent Response Team, out-patient Physiatrist and Rehabilitation services, Niagara Prosthetics & Orthotics
  • Recommendations are communicated and dictated into MosaiQ/Meditech

The Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist (CSRT) serves as the liaison between referring physicians and specialists, triages referrals, coordinates rapid access radiation therapy services and is the primary contact and patient navigator for the OROC clinic.
