Project Updates - South Niagara Site

In recognition of the urgent need for greater access to healthcare in our community, the planning for the South Niagara Site continues to move forward.

South Niagara Site

Together, we are designing a new kind of healthcare that puts the focus on your health and well-being. The South Niagara Site will embody a campus environment that fosters a community of connected care, will advance the boundaries of healing, and transform your experience in healthcare.

The South Niagara Site is working toward being the first WELL certified healthcare facility in Canada – focused on the health and well-being of our staff, volunteers, patients, families and caregivers and the Niagara community.

The new South Niagara Site will be an integral part of our connected healthcare system that centralizes services from existing facilities, making it easier for residents to access the care they need at one location, provide an overall better experience, and enable communities to be healthier.

By concentrating our resources at three regional sites, we will be better able to meet the growing needs of local residents with expanded services, support our staff and physicians, and keep pace with advancements in care. The new hospital will have 469 beds, which is an addition of 156 new beds in Niagara. This hospital site will feature regional centres of excellence in stroke, wellness and aging, and complex care for all Niagara residents. The Niagara region will also be well served by a full scope of acute care services provided at this site – a full-service Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, mental health and addiction services, surgical care, dialysis, diagnostics, and much more.

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) announced that the request for proposals (RFP) stage had closed for teams to submit their bids to design, build, finance and maintain the new South Niagara Site hospital project.

Following a fair, open and transparent request for qualifications process, three teams were shortlisted and invited to respond to an RFP in October 2021. Two teams submitted proposals – EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare (EDIH) and Niagara Care Partners. Over the next few months, submissions will be evaluated, and a successful proponent is expected to be announced in early 2023. A fairness monitor is overseeing the entire procurement process. IO and NH are working with the Ministry of Health to deliver this project.

After the contract is awarded, Niagara Health will work closely with staff and physicians to finalize the bidder’s design and start construction of the new hospital.
